El análisis historiográfico de una película exige revisar tanto su génesis como su desarrollo a lo largo de la realización. Un camino adecuado es partir de la correspondencia, las entrevistas, los guiones manuscritos y las transcripciones corregidas del director: todo un conjunto de documentos que evita críticas e interpretaciones descontextualizadas. En este caso se trata de la película Los cuatrocientos golpes (1959) de François Truffaut, cuyo análisis se basa en la etapa de preproducción a través de diferentes versiones escritas para el guión final. Esta cinta, plena de referencias autobiográficas, permite acercarse al proceso de elaboración artística del cineasta francés.
