Everyday co-productions of public-community space: lessons from the Barrio Justo Suárez

This article analyzes the public-community space of Barrio Justo Suárez (Buenos Aires, 1971-1975) based on the tension between its participatory design and the everyday appropriations developed over time. Drawing on a qualitative approach centered on a single case study with a historical-ethnographic perspective, the methodology articulates two temporalities -the participatory design process (1971-1974) and current practices in its community spaces- through three sources: documentary review of the Pilot Plan and technical materials, qualitative observation of the current state, and in-depth interviews with residents. The findings show that these spaces do not operate as stable supports, but as unfinished processes, reconfigured through incremental transformations, negotiations, disputes, and losses. It concludes that public life in housing complexes requires active institutions, renewed agreements, and collective care practices. Based on this case, the article proposes lessons to guide community rehabilitation strategies in Latin American contexts aimed at strengthening the collective capacities that sustain the common over time.
