Cholets: architectural disputes and spaces of power in El Alto, Bolivia

This article examines the phenomenon of cholets in El Alto, Bolivia, focusing on the tensions surrounding their architectural legitimacy and their role as markers of social distinction and cultural representation in a postcolonial context. The study draws on multi-sited ethnographic research conducted during three field trips to El Alto and La Paz between 2018 and 2020. Methods included in-depth interviews, participant observation, and a geographic and photographic mapping of cholets, complemented by digital tools to trace the global circulation of these buildings. Findings show that cholets, with their vibrant colors and distinctive designs, not only embody the aspirations of an emerging Aimara middle class but also challenge traditional architectural narratives, sparking debates about their legitimacy across academic circles. While the local architectural establishment often questions their validity as “real” architecture, internationally they are celebrated—albeit frequently through an exoticizing lens. The article concludes that cholets represent an architectural proposal that, beyond disputes over disciplinary legitimacy, operates as a mechanism of empowerment, enabling historically marginalized groups to redefine notions of modernity and establish new criteria of architectural value on their own terms.
