Gabriel García Márquez and the Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor: three problematic readings

Gabriel García Márquez’s Relato de un náufrago (The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor) is one of the most representative texts of Latin American literary journalism, a practice also known as nonfiction narrative. In this work, we offer an overview of the three main interpretations of this text by García Márquez, as well as the problems associated with each of these interpretations: first, this story has been analyzed from the testimonial theory; then, it has been inscribed within the rich colonial tradition in which the topic of shipwreck is a central theme; and finally, it has become part of the catalog of so-called New Journalism, which emerged from the ideas of Tom Wolfe to shape New Journalism. The conclusion of this work aims to incorporate Relato de un náufrago into the genre of contemporary chronicle writing in Latin America, with which it definitely maintains closer ties.
