Restoration and Cultural Value Enhancement of the House and Church of the Former Hacienda San Juan

Abstract

This project aims to restore and revitalize the house and church of the historic hacienda San Juan in Santiago de Surco, Lima. Architecture students and faculty from the University of Lima prepared a comprehensively documented assessment of the site's condition and prepared architectural plans for the main house and rancherías. Stratigraphic and exploratory studies provided insights into original construction techniques and key technical data for restoration. The proposal includes contemplation spaces around the monument and church. The intervention focuses on the first crujía of the main house, with a ground-floor museum on Ignacia Rodulfo, widow of Canevaro, and an on-site museum. The second floor will house offices, while the interior will be reserved for religious activities. In the rancherías, the plan envisions a gastronomic center, a multipurpose room, and exhibition spaces. By preserving its architectural integrity and decorative elements while adapting it for cultural and touristic use, this project seeks to restore hacienda San Juan to its former grandeur and ensure its lasting legacy.
