Abstract

This research analyzes the determinants of multidimensional and monetary poverty in Latin American countries. For this purpose, the panel data approach was used for the estimation of fixed and random effects models. The results for the monetary poverty model indicated that inequality, prevalence of malnutrition and population size have a positive and statistically significant effect on the level of monetary poverty. In addition, FDI and public spending on health were found to have a negative and statistically significant impact on it, while the effect of access to basic sanitation, electricity and the COVID-19 pandemic were not significant. In relation to the multidimensional poverty model, it was found that the prevalence of malnutrition and the COVID-19 pandemic have a positive and statistically significant impact. Likewise, public spending on health, access to basic sanitation and electricity have a negative and statistically significant effect on the poverty studied. Finally, there is no significance in inequality, FDI and population size.
