Private pension system and financing of the main economic groups: Peru 1996-2020

The objective of this article sought to determine the concentration level of the private pension system (SPP) investments in the main Peruvian capital economic groups between 1996 and 2020. The research used a descriptive approach and the SPP’s end-of-period statistics on the structure of the investment portfolio by issuer published by the Superintendence of Banking, Insurance, and Private Pension Funds (SBS). As a result, two stages were identified: between 1996 and 2002, nine Peruvian capital economic groups concentrated an average of 45,3 % of the SPP’s investment portfolio, and between 2003 and 2020, seven Peruvian capital economic groups accounted for an average of 22,7 % of the SPP’s investment portfolio. Thus, it was found that the Romero and Brescia groups, linked to the two largest banks in the country (Banco de Crédito del Perú and BBVA Perú, respectively), had the greatest participation in the SPP’s investment portfolio between 1996 and 2020. Additionally, some public policy proposals are formulated.
