Environmental compliance: the key to mitigating risks and ensuring corporate sustainability

This article examines the role of environmental compliance and its ability to translate legal obligations into corporate practices for risk prevention and management. Drawing on interviews with experts and an analysis of the Peruvian regulatory framework, it identifies the main barriers to its implementation and argues that adopting the principle of incorporation of environmental values, inspired by the Rio Declaration, allows for overcoming the reactive approach to environmental compliance and turning it into a strategic investment that enhances competitiveness, supports sustainable development, and prevents practices such as greenwashing. Likewise, the article contends that this perspective strengthens corporate sustainability, facilitates access to international markets, and reinforces the role of soft law as a tool for technical standardization
