Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the motivational styles used by urban dance teachers in Metropolitan Lima. To this end, the circumplex model of Aelterman et al. (2019) was employed. This model proposes four main styles: Autonomy Support, Structure, Control and Chaos, and eight respective substyles: Participative, Attuning, Guiding, Clarifying, Demanding, Domineering, Abandoning and Awaiting, two for each style. The method consisted of semi-structured interviews with three teachers and twelve students (four per teacher), as well as semi-structured observations of each teacher’s class. The results identified that the different teaching styles employed by the participants emerged in various teaching situations within the urban dance class. These situations can be classified within the three main phases of the class: beginning, development, and closing. Based on this, it was found that urban dance instructors predominantly use the Structure and Control styles when teaching. Therefore, it would be important within the field of urban dance to encourage instructors to more frequently use the Support for Autonomy substyles instead of the Control substyles.
