Abstract

The fishing sector in Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Peru presents comparative natural advantages and a relatively important socioeconomic value. However, historically most of the policy linked to the exploitation of natural resources have focused their efforts on the management of other activities. This is due, in part, to the assumption that the sector does not have the potential to generate effects that boost the rest of the economy. However, the empirical evidence on its multiplier effects and inter-industrial relations for Latin America is scarce. Within this framework, the objective of this research is to carry out a methodological exercise that allows assessing the importance of the fishing sector in the main producing countries of the region. For this, multiplier effects and indicators of productive interlinkages are estimated based on input-output matrices. The data correspond to the latest available at the time of this research, which is framed in a project of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research. This study constitutes a contribution to the literature, as it presents evidence on the usefulness of this type of data and methodologies for the assessment of the total economic effects of the activity and the analysis of its interindustrial relations. Finally, this research shows that an analysis based on the input-output matrix can be very useful for policy linked to the economic management of a natural resource such as that from fishing and aquaculture.
