Iran and the implications of its active presence in South America

Abstract

This article focuses on the elements that shape the internal and external politics of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and especially in the growing relations with South America in the 21st century. In this sense, the article examines whether the intensification of these relations depends mainly on conjunctural factors or whether the Persian country is really consolidating lasting ties with the South American nations. In this scenario, Iran's activism in South America raises risks and opportunities that Peru and the rest of South American nations must take into consideration to enhance their foreign policy without detriment to relations with other states in the Western Hemisphere.
